9th US Speedgolf Open With Oregon Ties

TEMECULA, California - Paige Vancil, from Oregon, took home the Women’s 36 holes Division, the National Championship at the 9th US Speedgolf Open at Temecula Creek Golf Club, Sunday.

Paige Vancil shot an 81, in 69:30 on Saturday and an 81 in 66:10 on Sunday for a total score of 297:40. She beat out Katie Humphrey who finished with a score of 378:24.

A speedgolf score is attained by taking your golf score and adding your run time for the round.

“It means everything to win the national championship. To have more female and younger adult representation in speedgolf is incredible. It is a growing sport and I am honored to be part of it.” Paige Vancil said.

Paige took second place alongside teammate Lauren Cupp last November at the Speedgolf World Championships in Japan.

Paige has taken after her dad Steve, who is a seasoned speedgolfer who has won numerous national events of the years.

“How cool is it that my daughter is playing in these things, and into it. I’m thankful my son came down and his wife, they came to be with us. I used to do these events to share time with my dad, and since he passed, I was not going to do it anymore. But my kids both said your going to go. Paige is now playing because of it, and wins the whole US Championship.” Steve Vancil said.

On top of winning the Women’s 36-hole Division Championship, Paige and her dad Steve Vancil, who has won a variety of Speedgolf events nationally, won the mixed doubles best ball Championship.

“To win with my dad is like old times. We have won the parent child Chapman event in Salem multiple times, and it is special to take the win with him today. It is just a preview of the father daughter team you will see in New Zealand for the World Speedgolf Championships in November 2026.” Paige Vancil said.

“Then she wants to play in the team event, we’re dog tired, and it doesn’t matter. We win the mixed, but there wasn’t that many people in the mixed but there wasn’t that many people in the mixed. It was a really hilly, hard course. It’s just fun doing that stuff with your family.” Steve Vancil said.

Steve Vancil, who is 60, competed in the 36-hole Open Division, where there are no age restrictions, despite being older than most of the field.

Steve Vancil shot a 74 in 57:12 on Saturday and a 73 in 54:04 on Sunday for a speedgolf score of 258:16, which was good for 7th place in the Open division. Robin Smith won the Open Division with a score of 235:07.

“To finish 7th in the open is pretty good. My wife reminds me, if you win the 40+, 50+, 60+, your doing well. I’m such a competitive idiot that I’m thinking how can I win there? For me to win now in the open division, I have to play unbelievably well. I have to shoot 65, because I’m not gonna run as fast, some of these guys are Olympic caliber 10k’ers two used to train for that. So there really fast, there gonna beat me by 15 minutes. But it was a great time with my family.” Steve Vancil said.

That score would have won him the 40+ masters division, the 50+ senior division, and the 60+ legends division had he participated in those.
