SISTERS, Oregon - Jamie Hall of PNW Golf Academy (Issaquah, WA) won the Pelzer Golf Oregon Open Thursday with a 12-under tournament that consisted of 54 holes at Aspen Lakes Golf Course.
Hall shot a 64 (8-under) on the first day of competition on Tuesday as he eagles the first hole of the event along with 6 other birdies. He shot an even par 72 on day two, followed by a final round 68 (4-under), which included six birdies to win by three strokes.
Defending Champion (and 2017 Champion) PGA Professional Russell Grove of Eastern Washington University finished in second place at 9-under and PGA Professional Blake Snyder of PNW Golf Academy finishing third at 7-under.
Brian Miller of Prineville CC (Prineville, OR) and Sam Renner of Awbrey Glen GC (Bend, OR) won low amateur honors with a 4-under championship.
“The win felt fine, even though I didn’t putt very well. I grew up in Madras,” Miller said. “I played high school golf for Madras High School, then I went and played college golf at San Diego State. I turned pro in 2003 and played professional golf for 15 years. I retired in 2018-2019 due to getting sick of traveling. I got my amateur status back shortly after that. I live in Prineville and I am a member of Prineville Country Club. I don’t play many events and prior to this tournament I didn’t touch a club for 3 weeks and didn’t play a practice round.”
Miller played professionally on a variety of tours, including the Nationwide tour now known as the Korn Ferry Tour, and a couple PGA Tour events.
Renner went to Summit High School in Bend, Oregon, won the 2024 PNGA men’s amateur Championship, and will be a senior at Washington State University this fall.
“It feels great to start the summer off hot! The field and the course were very challenging. It took a lot of grind and perseverance to finish where I did this week,” Renner said. “I will be a senior at WSU in the fall, excited for another great year with an amazing squad.
“I will be heading east to Pinehurst later this month for the North and South Amateur. In July, I have the PNGA at Sunriver Resort and then the Pacific Coast Amateur at Eugene Country Club. I’ll be finishing off the summer with US AM qualifying at Chambers Bay, then hopefully the US Amateur.”
A competitive field of 184 players competed for the 2025 Pelzer Golf Oregon Open Invitational hosted by Aspen Lakes with 92 professionals and 92 amateurs competing as four-player teams in both team and individual competitions, along with our individual championship.
The Pacific Northwest PGA Section hosted the major tournament, one of five on the season which earns participants points towards the Player of the Year points standings.
The five major events (WA Open, OR Open, NW Open, Rosauers and PPC) are worth Hudson Cup points (and Senior Hudson Cup points).
"The Oregon Open is a wonderful opportunity to deliver an exemplary tournament competition in a "major" environment for our Section's members. The event's history is as distinguished as the names of many of its champions." Frank Talarico, CEO of the PNW PGA, said.
Some former Oregon Open winners include Tommy Armour, Horton Smith, Chuck Congdon, Bob Duden, Bill Eggers, Jerry Mowlds, Pat Fitzsimons, Rick Acton, Peter Jacobsen, Jeff Coston, and Mike Davis.
Past champions entered in the event were PGA Professional Russell Grove of Eastern Washington University (2024, 2017), PGA Professional Shane Prante of The Home Course (2023), PGA Professional Kennedy Bodiford of Tokatee Golf Club who won as an amateur (2021), PGA Professional Brady Sharp of Oswego Lake Country Club (2020), PGA Professional Colin Inglis of Shadow Hills CC (2018), PGA Professional Ryan Benzel of Bear Creek CC (2016), PGA Professional Brian Thornton of Meridian Valley CC (2012), PGA Professional Corey Prugh of Community Colleges of Spokane (2008), PGA Professional Jeff Coston of Semiahmoo G&CC (2004, 1995), and PGA Professional Mike Gove of Inglewood Golf Club (1992).
